About Us
We are Frances Lyn Theatre School,
a theatre school with a difference.
Established in 2018 by Rachel Morris, we welcome children from 4 to 16 years of age
for not only dance, singing and drama but to help build the students confidence and
learn important life skills. Our classes not only teach three important artistic disciplines
but also aim to encourage children to be confident, well rounded individuals who
are sociable, friendly and creative. We base our approach on the 5 steps to Mental Wellbeing
as outlined by NHS (see more below).
We're based at Malton School, using their fantastic array of facilities and operate on Saturdays throughout term.
Our theatre school is easily accessible to the local towns and villages of Norton, Thornton-le-Dale, Kirkbymoorside,
Easingwold, Pickering and Helmsley.
When students join the school they, along with their parents/carers, are expected to follow our Code of Conduct.
Dancing
Dance is not only a fun way to burn off some energy but also exercises the brain.
It teaches kids how to work as a team, improves concentration skills, boosts overall
happiness and improves fitness. In our dance classes children will learn lots of styles
and techniques used in musical theatre as well as improving flexibility, strength and performance.
Singing
Singing is a wonderful way for children to express themselves. It also helps with
memory, speech and literacy. In their classes the children will again be taught lots of
different genres and styles. They will experience what it's like to sing as part
of a choir, as well as having the chance to sing solo if they wish.
Acting
Drama teaches children how to speak clearly and confidently as well as improving
literacy skills. It encourages imagination and creativity while teaching empathy. In their classes
children will study scripts of different genres as well as getting a grasp
on improvisation and role play, which allows them to experience situations they may not have
encountered before.

5 Steps to Mental Wellbeing
1. Connect with other people
Frances Lyn classes, especially drama, allow the children to connect and discuss issues
they may not encounter in their own lives. This facilitates an understanding of their feelings and
empathy when connecting with other people; building a sense of belonging and self-worth.
2. Be physically active
Dance, drama and singing each promote physical activity. Releasing endorphins whilst
increasing physical wellbeing, raises self esteem and boosts a child's mood.
3. Learn new skills
Learning new skills is a key focus at Frances Lyn. Dance, drama and singing each encourage
cognitive development, again increasing confidence and self esteem.
4. Give to others
Each year we do a fundraiser for charity, this year raising £600 for Macmillan Cancer Support.
We also have connections with a local company that provide entertainment in residential homes,
a perfect opportunity for students to perform creating a sense of purpose,
reward and connection to others.
5. Mindfulness
Being in the moment can help improve mental wellbeing. Children are increasingly
experiencing pressure across ages not only academically but also socially, especially in the age
of technology and social media. Focusing in class and getting lost in the moment allows
the students to experience escapism, as well as focus on their own thoughts and feelings.
